In 2003, Yorkshire Forward became the first Regional Development Agency to establish a network of CICs (Centres of Industrial Collaboration), an £11m initiative to help businesses harness the innovation and cutting edge technical expertise of some of the world's leading research facilities. The aim of the CIC programme was to help regional companies gain a competitive edge in the global marketplace, by helping to transfer knowledge from universities to regional companies and by encouraging investment from UK and international companies in the region. Each CIC brought together some of the finest experts in their respective fields to translate their knowledge and expertise into collaborative projects with commercial clients. The Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering CIC was established as a part of that programme, offering a professional management interface between industry and academia, and became the fully independent BITECIC Ltd in 2006. SInce inception, BITECIC Ltd has established a very successful track record providing technical consultancy and management support services to organisations active across the broad theme of Health Technology Innovation, for companies ranging in size from SMEs to large multi-nationals.
